The Best Salon Advice on Glowing Back-to-school Skin

When cooler weather rolls around, heavy layers are a no-brainer—and not just when it comes to fashion. Estheticians almost always suggest switching to heavier, creamier cleansers and moisturizers in the fall and winter. However, when it comes to skincare, the one rule is that there’s no one-size-fits-all rule.

“Everyone’s skin is completely different,” says Juut esthetician Rachel Barth. “It’s hard to give an overall generic overview.”

Rachel suggests people come into Juut Salon Spa for a free 15-minute skin analysis and consultation for a customized regimen. The next best thing? Following a pro’s expert advice. Fortunately, Rachel and fellow Juut esthetician Anna Larkin are here to share just that.

Here’s what you need to know when it comes to perfecting—and streamlining—your fall skincare regimen.

More isn’t always more.

It’s easy to idolize dewy-skinned YouTubers with 15-step skincare routines, but for most of us, that kind of time (and money) investment isn’t realistic. Especially for students scrambling to make it to early morning classes or commuters trying to shave precious minutes off their morning routine.

“A night regimen is way more helpful to your skin than a morning regimen,” Rachel says.

Keep things simple in the morning. Rachel says it’s not always essential to wash your face if you washed it the night before. “It can be over-drying, and if you over-dry your skin, it may over-produce oil and sebum, leading to breakouts.”

A simple splash of water is enough for people with dry skin. Follow with a rich moisturizer, such as Tulusara Renew Morning Creme, and SPF.

“The Morning Creme is perfect for someone with dry skin,” Rachel says.

For people with oily skin, Anna suggests washing with Aveda Botanical Kinetics All-Sensitive Cleanser, then applying a toner. “Toner is the best way to hydrate and add moisture without adding extra oil to your skin,” Anna says. “It’s like a drink of water for your face that makes the products work better, be more productive, and it acts as a vehicle to push them into your skin.”

Night: a time for skin repair

Rachel says the evening is the best time to do more involved routines. For one thing, it’s important to thoroughly remove makeup, pollutants and free radicals that may have landed on your skin over the course of the day. Sleeping with makeup on can lead to clogged pores and increased signs of aging. Second, nighttime is when the skin repairs itself, making it an optimal time to apply potent serums or creams. Exfoliate skin for optimal penetration.

“Tourmaline Charged Radiant Skin Refiner is a great way to remove dead skin and get a glow,” Anna says. “Start by using it once a week (in the evenings), then after a few weeks, build up to twice a week.”

“You get a good repair of your skin by doing a cleanser, an exfoliator two or three times a week, and a moisturizer on top of that,” Rachel says.

Enlist the pros

Rachel emphasizes the importance of a good esthetician—someone you see for facials regularly, about four times a year. By seeing the same esthetician consistently, you build the relationship and they get to know you and your skin.

“Clients who have been with me for years get more detailed consultations and advice about what they should be doing, because I know their skin,” Rachel says.
