The Best Salon Tips for Summer Hair Health

April 18, 2014

With summer on its way (we swear it is!), it is important to keep your hair as healthy as you can with additional sun exposure. Color can sometimes fade with the added summer activities in the sun, wind, salt, and chlorine. Here are my favorite tips for keeping your hair healthy, shiny and beautifully colored this summer!

First, start out with a botanical therapy treatment! Depending on if your hair needs moisture or strength (your service provider can tell you) we can increase the protein or moisture in your hair by 86% with just one of these treatments! At Juut, Botanical Therapy treatments start at $30 and stay in your hair for the next four to six weeks. Due to the increased protein or moisture added, these simple treatments ensure your hair looks beautiful as we roll through summer! For anyone getting their hair colored, this is a must!

I also like to remind all of my color guests that if your hair is in great condition your color will last from touch-up to touch-up but if it is not, your color may not last as long and you will see fading sooner. After receiving a botanical therapy treatment, it’s best to wait 24 hours before you shampoo your hair. When it’s time to shampoo, I always recommend using Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo and Conditioner. The Color Conserve Conditioner will especially help extend the life of your color.

Once your colored hair has been treated with the botanical therapy treatment and you are at home, maintain the health of your hair by giving yourself a deep conditioning treatment once a week. This will keep your hair in the best, healthiest shape! If you have fine to medium hair, I recommend Aveda Color Conserve Strengthening Treatment. If your hair is curly or coarse in texture, Aveda Sun Care After-Sun Hair Masque would be my number one recommendation. These weekly treatments at home are valuable to the health of your hair as they contain “Morikue” protein to help strengthen hair from the inside out. These at-home options will ensure the longest lasting color through the summer months. If you want to pull out all the stops to really elongate time between color appointments and keep hair as healthy as can be, use a small amount of Aveda Color Conserve Daily Color Protect in your damp hair before styling. This will protect your hair and color from UVA/UVB rays by using wintergreen and cinnamon oil.

If you live near a body of water or spend must of your summer poolside, you will want to read through the following easy steps to keep hair strong, healthy, and shiny this summer!
1. Always get your hair wet before you get in the water! Wet hair will absorb less salt or chlorine.
2. Shampoo your hair right after getting out of the water. I recommend using Aveda Sun Care Hair and Body Cleanser. This cleanser removes chlorine, salt and build-up.
3. Once your hair is dry, spray Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil which is a water-resistant UV defense mist to protect hair from the harmful suns rays.

Happy summer and healthy hair, everyone!
