Celebrating 40 Years of Daymaking

This year marks a milestone that fills us with both pride and deep gratitude for our artists and guests—40 years of JUUT Salonspa. What began as a vision in Minneapolis has grown into something far greater than we could have imagined: a movement of love, creativity, and connection, lived out every day through the art of beauty.

It’s a milestone we reached by showing up for one another. With every visit, we celebrated and uplifted you, our guest—and you reminded us of the bond we forged through the spirit of Daymaking.

We feel the love, and we appreciate you.

A legacy rooted in innovation

The JUUT story is as much about people and purpose as it is about style. On September 8, 1985, David Wagner, then Vice President of Horst & Friends Salons, opened his first salon—Salon Salon—on Lake and Hennepin in Minneapolis. In 1989, David merged Salon Salon with Horst, eventually buying him out of the partnership in 1991.

In 1998, David acquired the renowned Yosh Salon in Palo Alto, California, known for its artistry and influence in the beauty industry. With this expansion came a new vision and a new name. In 1999, the brand became JUUT Salonspa.

The name “JUUT” comes from the Japanese word Juuten, meaning to fill or refill. As a first name, JUUT means to uplift humanity and serve others—a definition that perfectly reflects the mission and culture of our salonspas.

The Daymaker movement

Our philosophy of Daymaking was born from this culture of care. Inspired by David Wagner’s best-selling book, Life as a Daymaker: How to Change the World by Making Someone’s Day, Daymaking has become the heartbeat of JUUT. It’s the belief that a simple act of kindness—whether through a haircut, a smile, or a listening ear—can change someone’s life and ripple out into the world.

For 40 years, that philosophy has guided us. It has defined how we approach every guest, every interaction, and every member of our team.

Honored along the way

Along this journey, we’ve been humbled to receive recognition for doing what we love:

These honors belong to all of us—our team, our guests, and our community—because JUUT has always been about people first.

Looking forward with gratitude

As we celebrate 40 years, we return to the heart of our mission: transforming the world with beauty, one guest at a time.

To our team—thank you for bringing your passion, artistry, and kindness to JUUT every single day. To our guests—thank you for trusting us with your beauty, your stories, and your lives. And to our community—thank you for embracing the spirit of Daymaking and walking this journey with us.

Here’s to honoring our past, celebrating our present, and creating a future where beauty continues to inspire, uplift, and transform.

With gratitude,
The JUUT Salonspa Family
