For Accala Sullivan, salon manager in St. Paul, Daymaking usually revolves around her staff. While they are busy making the days of their clients, she is hard at work finding ways to spread extra joy and happiness to them. Currently, she’s honoring the guest service team, who spend their time at the front desk and handle four times the amount of guest interactions that service providers do. “We decided to do a ‘Guest Service Specialist Appreciation Week,’” Sullivan says. “We wanted to let them know we really value and appreciate everything they do by taking some extra steps to…
Some Daymaking stories are about big gestures people remember forever. But more often, Daymaking is about little moments where there’s an opportunity to do something small to make a big impact. Bethany Dorsey, assistant salon manager in St. Paul, says she puts the focus on these moments and on conversations that service providers have with guests so they can turn it into something big. “For example, the other day, I asked a guest if she needed something to drink,” she says. “She said she needed coffee because her coffee machine broke that morning.” After getting the guest her coffee,…
Julz LaMantia, hair director and master stylist at Juut’s Tempe, Arizona location, has had a front seat to the salon’s transformation since Juut took it over in February 2015. While she was happy with her previous employer, since Juut took the business over, LaMantia says the culture has been transformed by Daymaking. “The difference is amazing,” she says. “Once you adopt the culture, you grow as people and as a salon—even the guests have noticed and comment on the vibe here.” When Juut bought the old salon, nobody was let go. Of the 17 stylists who came on board,…
In her almost eight years at Juut as a stylist and makeup artist, Maria Candiotti has seen a variety of clients with a wide range of personalities and hair styles. But only one client ever came to her with burnt hair. “She lived in an old apartment, and the first time she used the oven, her hair got singed when she pulled a frozen pizza out of the oven,” she says. Embarrassed, the client came to the salon wearing a hat. She was horrified, but also had a sense of humor. “When she took off her hat, I could…
Teaching others, whether it’s a kindergartner or a college student, is one of the most rewarding professions. And teaching someone to be a Daymaker is not just rewarding, it’s an intimate, bonding experience for both teacher and student. Maria Sapletal, manager at Juut’s Uptown location, has been with the company for eight years. For some of those years, she managed the academy, where she coached new stylists through their training, including a weekly Daymaker class. “Training new stylists was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever been a part of,” she says. “They work so hard for so…
Many years ago, a first-time visitor walked into Juut for her appointment. Like any new client, she was given a tour of the salon, had a great guest experience, and then finally, was given a copy of David Wagner’s book “Life as a Daymaker” as part of her new client gift. As she stood at the desk checking out, she began to cry. Brenda Wherry, guest care coordinator, has been at Juut for 10 and a half years and still remembers this client vividly. “She was in a really hard place in her life,” Wherry explains. “She had left…
Food is magic. It is healing, nourishing, and transformative, and many of our greatest memories and relationships have been forged over shared meals. While hair and beauty are the means through which we are most often able to fulfill our mission—to create dynamic and significant daymaking experiences that positively impact people, society and the world at large—we are constantly in search of more ways to live up to that ideal. What better way to do so than food? The following wellness recipes are delicious and warming, which is exactly what we tend to crave this time of year. We…
At the heart of JUUT Salon Spa and at the heart everything we do is a story—a story some of you may know already. It took place many years ago, on an ordinary day at the salon. The main players are our founder, David Wagner, and a longtime guest of his. This particular guest came in every five weeks, but was back in for an appointment earlier than usual. For no particular reason, she said; she just wanted to look and feel good that night. Creative Commons | Source: Pexels The service proceeded as usual, with talking, joking, an…
It’s probably not news to you that when the seasons change, your skin care routine should, too. But sometimes it’s hard to tell what aspects need to go and what should stay. Skin type, existing habits and personal preferences mean there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but here at the best salons and spas in Minneapolis, Scottsdale, Tempe and Palo Alto, we have plenty of basic tips to take into consideration as we head into winter. Read on to get the scoop. Take shorter, cooler showers and baths. Especially during the chillier months, the thought of taking a long soak in…
At Juut Salon Spa, every last one of our guests is truly, indescribably beautiful. Really. You might be tempted to assume that we got extraordinarily lucky, but that’s not the case. Instead, we made an extraordinary commitment: to discover the beauty in every person who walks through our doors. Even—or rather, especially—if they don’t see it themselves. Creative Commons | Source: Pexels IT STARTS WITH A CONSULTATION… Your pre-service consultation is important for all the reasons you’d expect: it’s a chance for your stylist to evaluate the state of your hair, talk about what’s working and what’s not, and…
